Soccer team forming

Interested in joining fellow community soccer players to take on teams around Europe?

Spc. David Jones, a former All-Army soccer coach who works at Wiesbaden Health Clinic’s Immunization Clinic, invites players of all abilities to join the Wiesbaden team. The team meets weekly at Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center with soccer season starting this spring.

“We’re just getting started this year and players of any ability will be considered,” said Jones, explaining that because of mission requirements it’s important to have a large roster when players are called away for military duty and can’t make games. “Also many former players have left to serve on deployments.

“I encourage more players to come out and to come out more regularly.
“We’ve done pretty well in the past,” said Jones, who is looking forward to coaching the All-Army soccer team again in the future. He added that several of the past Wiesbaden players were most definitely All-Army material.

Besides playing against fellow garrison soccer teams, Jones said, as in past years, the Wiesbaden team would head to other European tournaments. “We’re going to a big tournament in Holland in May. We’ll be playing against semi-pro players. We did pretty well last year,” Jones said.

Jones, who is looking forward to the publication of a book he wrote about his experiences of having gone through Army basic training as a 38-year-old Englishman, said anyone interested in joining the community soccer team can come out to the Sunday practices, call him at mil 337-7413 or email him at David.Jones100@us.army.mil.
