Boem, who serves as his unit’s environmental representative, is very proactive in implementing the garrison guidance for the program.
HMMP ensures the tracking of all hazardous materials in the garrison footprint. A key role will be held by the Hazardous Material Re-use Center which will open at the Mainz-Kastel Storage Station next month. The facility will maintain an inventory of HazMat items available free to units and activities assigned to USAG Wiesbaden.
Marcus Strohn, HazMat program manager, said popular items available at the center include petroleum, oils and lubricants products, cleaning supplies, windshield cleaner, spray paints and one- to five-gallon cans of paint. The products are all new in the package and within their expiration dates; however, the supply will become available through various sources in the supply system, usually when a unit turns in excess supplies.
“The only difference between these items and what you get via the supply chain is these are free, these are things that were not needed by other units or customers and were destined for disposal,” said Stohn. “We intercept it, distribute it and it’s brand new. So before purchasing something, check with us.”
Strohn pointed out that along with saving money, units can reduce hazardous waste disposal costs by using the center. Anything not distributed through the center before it expires has to be disposed of according to HazMat regulations and that can be expensive, he added.
The HMRC will be located in Building 4025 on Mainz-Kastel Storage Station.
