Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, 98, known as the “Candy Bomber,” waves to visitors June 10 at an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Airlift.
Halvorsen flew into Wiesbaden Army Airfield on a C-47 Skytrain, the type he used to deliver supplies and, famously, candy to the former West Berlin.
