October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence impacts one in four women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control, while it impacts one in seven men. Domestic Violence knows no bounds, no matter what rank/grade, education level, job function, race or religion you are — it can impact you or your loved ones.
The ACS Family Advocacy Program is hosting a variety of events around the garrison to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month. These events are geared toward all service members, civilians and their Families.
On Oct. 1 at 6:45 p.m., Army Community Service will hold a candlelight vigil on the lawn of the Clay Kaserne Chapel. The event is co-sponsored by the chaplains and Army Community Service.
The candlelight vigil is a family-friendly, communitywide event, honoring victims of domestic violence and building awareness around the world. A poem, proclamation and message of hope will be shared by the chaplains and the Garrison Commander. Light refreshments will be provided.
The ScreamFree Marriage seminar will be hosted Oct. 7-8 at ACS from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the training room at Texasstrasse 57. The ScreamFree series seeks to improve communication between couples through positive communication methods, sans screaming. Free childcare is available but spots are limited to those who register through ACS and Child, Youth and School Services. Please call ACS at (0611) 143-548-9201 to reserve a spot as soon as possible.
During the month, ACS will be handing out battery-operated candles to commands and management around the installation. This is the “light the way” initiative, encouraging awareness of Domestic Violence.
The candle represents hope, increasing the importance of resources available to USAG Wiesbaden.
If you are a commander or supervisor and would like one in your unit space, please call ACS at (0611) 143-548-9201 to have your candle delivered by Victim Advocacy.
On Oct. 8, ACS staff will be passing out domestic violence awareness pins and bracelets. We encourage community members to wear these throughout the month, showing your support for domestic violence victims and the resources available.
Please take a moment this month to show support by wearing a pin or bracelet, participating in the candlelight vigil on Oct. 1 or call ACS to get your battery operated candle delivered to your unit.
Preventing abuse is everyone’s business.
